Posted 2008-04-21 ***Reannouncement*** Iowa City VA Medical Center Iowa City, IA Opening Date: April 7, 2008 MPA # 08-56 Closing Date: April 25, 2008 Medical Records Technician Tumor Registrar A vacancy still exists for a full-time Medical Records Technician for the Health Information Management Section, Business Office, at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. Applicants who previously applied for this position need not reapply. Incumbent uses information form the Commission on Cancer, the American College of Surgeons Cancer Program guidelines, the National VA Oncology Program and NCR SEER Program to properly code the diagnosis, histology, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease and treatment. Through use of classification and coding systems, determines how to code and record new diagnostic terms, treatments, drugs and therapies for which no reference or precedent is available as a guide. Consults with providers for clarification and/ specificity on documentation. Incumbent submits monthly data to the VA Central Registry and to the American College of Surgeon’s National Cancer Database. BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Experience and Education (1) Experience: Two years of experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work and meet the following KSAs: § Ability to apply knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy/pathophysiology, and disease processes sufficient to appropriately file, locate, and disclose health information; § Ability to correctly apply a practical knowledge of laws and regulations related to the confidentiality of health information and the release of information from medical records; § Ability to apply guidelines and standards for the maintenance of an approved tumor registry; § Skill in interpreting and adapting health information guidelines that are not completely applicable to the work or have gaps in specificity and ability to use judgment in completing assignments with incomplete or inadequate guidelines. OR, (2) Education. Successful completion of an associate’s degree with a major field of study in medical record technology/health information technology which was accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) at the time the program was completed. Certified Cancer Registrar preferred. OR, (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
